Finding the Right Therapist

Finding a therapist can feel a lot like dating.

It can be hard to find someone that feels “right enough” for you, on top of potentially feeling more anxious, worried or depressed than usual. You’ve searched through online directories, maybe tried to connect with your insurance and still feeling a little overwhelmed. Unfortunately, this can be a common experience for folks trying to find someone to support them.

When talking to friends and loved ones I often hear “But how can I know if this is the right person?” My answer is simple. During your consultation pay attention to how you feel.

The goal of therapy is to have someone not only listen to what’s going on for you, but also provide feedback and support to create change. In the consultation, did you get the sense that the therapist understood what you meant? Were they able to connect with you in some way? Ultimately, did you feel heard?

Therapy is tough work. Together we will build goals with one another. These goals will be considered our North Star of your treatment, serving as a helpful reminder when we are blown off course. We will discuss the current symptoms you’re experiencing, and how these show up in various aspects of your life. We will examine the different ways these symptoms can be both helpful and harmful, and in what areas of your life you want to pivot in order to feel better. Together, we will create lasting change in your life.
